How to Read a Newspaper(兩頁寫作)

Summary
People want quick and easy ways to learn language, to acquire a huge vocabulary, to read fast, understand more and to become good writers. Reading an English-language newspaper regularly is a good way to improve our language skill and learn how to write, because you will see the same vocabulary again and again and have more background information about continuing stories.

The author used to spend most of every Sunday for reading The Time with her husband. But now, she became busy and overstressed and cannot spend so much time for reading. There are some tips that she give to us while we read the newspaper.

First, you need to choose a newspaper which could give you actual news. Some of newspapers are full of gossip and half-truths that are not worth to read. The newspaper of Christian Science Monitor and the International Herald Tribune is the author recommended for get some international news. Moreover, in the United States, USA Today offers national and international news with easy language. What is more, you can find the best paper in the city where you are- The Bangkok Post, The London Times and The Chicago Tribune- for local, national and international news.

Second, you need to know about the various parts of a newspaper to decide what to read and skip. In most English-language papers, the hard news would be printed on the front page. And the “top” news of the day can be found in the upper right-hand corner in this page too. Furthermore, advice specific columns written by the editor or editorials and letters written by member of the public appear on the “op-ed” page

Third, you can throw away the sections that you have no interest in. Next, briefly read each headline and choose just five articles that interest you and read only the first paragraph or two. Then read a little more the articles which attract you and then keep move on to the next section.

In general, sports news is different form “normal” English so that it is difficult to read. Additionally, read the advice column can learn about custom. By the way, don’t worry about vocabulary because many of the same words will appear again and again. Try to guess meaning from the context and use a dictionary for only few words.

Finally, there are many customized online news services. You can choose the topics you interest in and your computer seeks that news for you each day. And you can only read the summary of each article and often see pictures and hear audio, too. But if you choose this way to read news, you might miss some fascinating news that you don’t yet know interests you and miss the wonderful experience of lying on the living room floor on a rainy Sunday afternoon with a mug coffee and every section of The Times surrounding you.

A Full Box of Kisses

Summary

A three-year-old daughter was punished by his father for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper and decorating it under the Christmas tree. The next morning, the girl gave her father that gift which was empty and led her father mad again. After the girl explained that she blew kisses into the box, her father was crushed and begged for her forgiveness. Her father kept that gold box for years. When he upset, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remembered the love of her daughter.

The Graduation Present

Summary

A young man who was getting ready to graduate form college asked his father for a sports car. But his father gave him a bible (the Bible). A young man was really angry and left home till one day he was sad and regretful hearing that his father's death. Coming home to take care of things, he saw the Bible which his father gave him for his graduation gift and discovered that a verse, Matt 7:11, underlined by his father. And there was a key of sport car which had paid in full dropped from the back of the Bible.

Feed Your Belly – and Your Mind!

The specimen is known as a teenager. Come mealtime, it grabs a plate and a glass of juice, and goes into hiding in its room. Soon, the sound of loud music mixing with videogame gunshots emanate from the room. Stay Out! reads the sign on the door.

If meals were only about eating food, there would be nothing wrong with the scene described above. But according to experts in adolescent development, the value of family spends eating together, the less likely its teenage children are to engage in self-destructive activities such as smoking and drinking. Other benefits range from picking up new vocabulary through conversation to performing well in school. Moreover, lending a hand in preparing meals can boost a teenager’s self-esteem.

One specialist even contends that family meals can “civilize children” and “teach them to be a member of their culture.” Spending time with members of your family is an excellent occasion to exchange ideas, talk about problems and share feelings. It is one of the rare moments when everybody is together. So turn off the TV, enjoy the food, and feed your mind by sharing with your loved ones!

The teenagers may eat their meal in their own room. In the view of some experts in adolescent development, there are many advantages to have children enjoy their meal with their family. Moreover, sharing problems and feelings in family mealtime is quiet important.

As can be seen in the chart, during the period 2001 to 2006, the funds for the war were more and more increased. In the beginning of the period the cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars was approximately $19 billion and by far in 2006 had grown to $170 billion. The maximum rise was from 2002 to 2003. Base on past years, we estimate there may be $20 billion in supplemental war spending for 2007 and 2008.

A sewing machine


Do you have something that owned by you or your family that has been passed down from earlier generations? And this thing has a long story which warmed you deeply. However, you might still smile when every time you saw it. There is a sewing machine with 70s year long, and my mother loves it very much.

According to my mother, this sewing machine was part of the dowry that my great grand-parents gave to my grandmother. Although the family was poor, you could always see my grandmother’s smile on her face. She enjoyed using this machine to darn the clothes and to make some clothes to her children. Her optimistic attitude made their life happier.

As my mother got married and this sewing machine would become the dowry passed down to her. Now, my grandmother had passed away for a long time and the sewing machine cannot work anymore. But we believe that we would keep it as a treasure from generation to generation in memery of my grandmother.
